Greetings.
So now that I feel proficient with VDJ I am ready to take the next step and purchase a controller, preferrably all-in-one, as I want to be as mobile as possible.
Here are the choices:
VDJ website hypes the Numark DMC2
The list of guides in the forum from two years ago hypes the Herc RMX
I have been looking at the Denon HC4500.
I want to be able to video and music mix and have noticed that some do not have cross faders. Can I just use my mixer crossfader? Probably not.
I checked out the Behringer but I guess there is a chip problem?
Now I see info about the Numark NS7?
I want a unit that is reliable. Rackmount or not. I saw some Xp10's come and go on Ebay.
So if it was your choice...would you go with Denon, Numark, or Hercules, or another brand/model?
I want the most bang for my buck in addition to compatability with VDJ, dependability, and reliablity.
Is that asking too much?

If you want an all-in-one device for video/audio mixing, commonly supported by VDJ then you want to look at:
With soundcards...
Hercules RMX
M-Audio Xponent
Numark Omni Control
Vestax VCI-300
Without soundcards...
Numark Total Control
Vestax VCI-100
Ion iCue
There is also the Audiophony Virtuality Mix, but I have no information on this really...

Hey,
this topic seems to have captured my attention really well, and i do have lots to say about this.
first let's start with numark.. they bought virtual dj, turned it into their Virtual vinyl and created a variety of controls for it.
the most common on the forum is total control and dmc-2. neither one has a sound card. i\'ve dj\'d with dmc-2 for about 1 year and it\'s great. it has independent faders for audio and video.
i can't think of one product numark has that supports 2 decks and has built in soundcard.
next let's move on to hercules.. rmx is out of my field but mk2 has served me well even before virtual dj. the buttons wore out. it's specialty is it's built in midi mixer. fader, high, mid, low, volume, basic mixer functionality so you won't need a mixer. just take hercules, laptop, speakers, and that's it. i hear controlls are decent. from what i see, the rmx is an update/upgrade from mk2. nothing special.
lastly denon.. let me tell you right now. do not get hd2500 as it will cause vdj to go bezerk. i've exchanged hd2500 for hc4500 and currently waiting for shipping. by simply looking at the controller you can tell it has more buttons than hercules and dmc-2 combined. i hear jp's mapper takes the controller to a whole new level. if you read his mapper's info, you'll see it's bundled with everything. plus it has a built in sound card. also, hc4500 features x-control. which in theory can connect to denon mixer and send crossfader fader midi signals to vdj. so there is your fader. useless, pointless, i know, but it's there. why use mixer on mixer and mixer on software?? it makes no sence to me, but it's there. mixer must support x-control for this feature to take place. such as dn-x500 and 900. denon its self is tied to pcdj, so .. e'hem.. awkward. i heard nothing but great feedback on this forum for this device, so i'm waiting to get a hold of it.
hercules sound card.. can be used in asio (dual stereo (4ch) 1 software, low latency) isn't the loudest one on the face of the planet but it is supposed to have improved since their mk2. plus instead of mini, it has 1/4" output. soundcard can also be used in wdm (dual stereo (4ch) multiple software, ok latency). support timecodes
denon's sound card.. seems both hd2500 and hc4500 have the same sound card. it's very good. in asio (dual stereo(4ch), 1 software, ultra low latency) and wdm (single stereo(2ch, multiple software, ok latency) doesn't support timecodes. i don't know how they call it asio if the i(input) is missing... w/e that's another topic.
other companies.. i know nothing about them, so nothing shall be said.
on a personal note, don't bother with tech support from either hercules or denon as both have a horrible reputation for customer support on the forums. and numark virual vinyl has been discontinued. my best advise is to go to a dj store and tell them you want to play around with each of these devices before purchasing it. and be sure to tell them that you are a "serious" buyer. and don't lie when you say "seirous"

fellow DJs: thanks so much for your input, I greatly appreciate it.
It looks like I have narrowed it down to the:
Denon HC4500
Hercules RMX
thanks again for your input!

damn...........
now im liking the looks of the Xponent...........so many choices.
does anyone know if any of the all in one devices with the built in sound cards have 'tables' that offer push and pull resistance? that are realistic feeling? so that i cant just spin each wheel like a top, like most numark units. or at least like most CDN's?
i know that a lot of the single units like the CDJs have the torque and resistance i am looking for but what about the all in one's?
thanks in advance.

The NS7 is the only one really that I can think of, but probably isn't really a "mobile" unit.
The Xponent drawback is no microphone connectivity, so a (small) external mixer would be needed.
The HC4500 will also require an external mixer, and it's not free spinning like a normal CD player either.

Sorry, was editing my post as you replied.
Do you need microphone or timecode usage?
I prefer the Xponent over the RMX personally, IMHO the jogs are much better and the unit has more controls.

for those of you who do or do not care:
i just ripped off the edge of an envelope and, as best i could, ripped the edge into three equal strips
on one strip i wrote H, for herc rmx
on one strip i wrote D, for denon hc4500
on one strip i wrote X, for the m-audio xponent
i then took the strips, wadded them into uniform balls, and began shaking the three balls in my cupped hands.
shake em up shake em up shake em up shake em
i then opened my hands ever so, as if getting ready to make a gnarly duck call, and waited for the first ball to roll out of the opening in smy hands.
after a few seconds one ball came popping out of the top of my hands, sealed with fate.
i was nervous. this was it. after all the bs, the worrying, the wondering, the well this has this, and that has that, and that has this but this doesnt have that but it has this..............
i unraveled the ball of paper awaiting the single letter that would decide my destiny.
and the letter was........................ ............
x
im going with the m-audio xponent.
fug it. pull the trigger.

ive been down to the stores and tried them out.....
the ones i really like are the pioneer cdjs because of the large platter with resistance and torque.
ive tried other single units like the pioneer cdj that have the wheels like the hc4500 where they are almost pressure sensitive pieces of floppy plastic waiting for the scratch to occur.
however i cant afford the pioneer cdjs right now and im trying to keep my setup as small as possible, not that the cdjs are that big.
i read that you suggested the xponent after i posted what happened in my shake of fate.
the only thing with the xponent, here i go, is that it doesnt have the two phono inputs for my turntables, to my knowledge?
it does however have access for footpedals.
i also like the xponent because it has fairly large platters that are flat, not small enough so that they are basically rounded and not so small that i can only fit one finger on the surface.
my only concern is xponents compatability with vista. fugging vista.
but after my shake of fate and my later notice of your reco it looks like the xponent is on and poppin.
thanks again.

Xponent has no line/phono/mic inputs at all I'm afraid.
Works fine under vista though :)
I would still recommend trying the controllers first if you can however.

i can connect the 'master output' from the xponent to a 'line in' on my stanton rm406 and then be able to use the mic through my 406 and have three additional lines right?
im just going to have to sacrifice the timecoded vinyl unless i go with the torq conectiv. i dont want to lug around the turntables and the coffin anymore. im getting too old for that anyhow.
do you know if at a future date i could connect the torq conectiv to the xponent so that i could have the best of both worlds?
its hard to give up the smell and feel of vinyl.

While it's a little more money, the Denon HS5500 is a good choice too. Built in soundcard, two complete controllers in one, spinning platter, and the ability to use it standalone.

You can always add another soundcard and use that, yes, doesn't have to be a connectiv :)

that denon hs5500 is hot! just a little pricey. the ability to switch from deck to deck on a single deck is sick tho. doesnt look like it has much for inputs.
when you say spinning platter, does the platter actually spin when it is playing? that may be the dumbest question or the greatest new invention.
so i have been looking at a lot of video of the xponent and for the most part it looks legit. i like the aspect that, besides looking like a christmas tree at times, that the two sides pulse with lights to the beat in order to make it easier to beatmatch, or sync, whatever.
i have also still been checking out the herc rmx because it has the phono inputs and the mic inputs so that i can record the mic and use timecoded vinyl if i want. (its killing me thinking of getting a unit that does not incorporate my tables)
i think that if i recorded from the xponent and wanted to use the mic that it would not register in the recording?
as of now, when i record in vdj and use the mic from my mixer it does not pick up, i doubt much would change with the xponent because in theory it would be the same setup.
the rmx just looks kinda janky although it is steel construction while the xponent is mainly plastic. the xponent also has way more knobs for customizing the flanger, etc. . . to my knowledge. i was also kinda hoping for a rackmount unit which neither are. the xponent also has the touchpad for mousing.
i think i am just having a really hard time picking the xponent when i know that i will not be able to hook up my tables or my mic.
its all about two turntables and a mic right? :>
plus...the demo of the rmx from the herc guy at whatever show it was unveiled was strictly corny. most of the xponent demos ive seen rock.
maybe i will just get both and use the xponent for gigs and the rmx at home with the timecodes.
i am taking donations.
if the denon hs 5500 platter actually spins im all about it.
i appreciate your continued correspondence.

If you have tables i'd say it no contest, RMX all the way ;)
One thing i don't like about the xponent is that they put the jog wheels near the top of the unit, which means you have to reach a bit to use them. I'd rather have them right in front of me. RMX is built like a tank too.

the HS5500 is no where near done.....
we played with them all weekend in Atlantic city at the VDJ booth, and I can tell you two things right off the bat that suck....
first, the moving platter is extremely sensitive to virbation..the damn thing was warbling like you were tapping your finger on the platter...
second of all, the platter is not very torquey at all.. if you stop it with your finger, it springs forward like it's on a rubber band... not cool if you're trying to mix..
I was really not impressed, especially for the price...
