Hey everybody!

I have been experiencing a problem when I seach for a track on my laptop. Everything freezes for sometimes up to 15 seconds. The audio still plays fine, and the video never stutters, but all on screen motions freeze and nothing is responsive while the seach is happening. Here are my specs:

Del XPS 1710
2.3 Ghz
2 GB Ram
Win XP
External USB powered 320 GB HDD

This never happened before, but now it kreeps up on me. The strange thing is that sometimes I have no problems for the first hour or so, then it starts jamming up, but only when I'm searching.

I've been playing around with a few ideas and the root of the problem seems to be having too many song files in particualr folders, but when I reduced thier size and still included them in the search, the lag still occured.

Has anybody else experienced this and/or know how to resolve it?

Thanks in advance!

Is there alot of space taken p on your internal harddrive??and also it might be your RAM.. i see its 2 gb..but sometimes you have to use this cleaning tool to get your RAM back up at 2 gb..

That happens to me when i search by FILEDATE, because it's scanning your hard drive in realtime. I've already reported this to the Teamers and they are working on it (That's what they said).
I guess it has to be added to the XML just like the FIRST SEEN/LAST PLAY/ETC.
Hopefully there is a fix soon cause i use this feature a lot.

Mostly likely due to your pc needing to "spin" the drive back up. My ext hdd when not accessed take a few seconds to get back up and running.

@ djpr1

Come to think of it, I use the filedate column as well. I'll try switching it off and see if I get the same issue.

@homeboy

You're right about the HDD spinning back up, but this happens every single time I search, even if there are mere seconds between each search. I should add that I've been using this exact setup for 2 years, 1.5 of which have been flawless. Only recently did this issue begin, but....it could have been around the same time that I initiated the filedate feature.

I'll keep ya posted on the outcome of it all, though any more advice would be great.

Thanks, everyone, for the comments!

OK, I got rid of the "filedate" column and the problem still persists. Very strange....after and hour of normal playing, the search lag came and never left till the end of the event.

Any more advise out there?

C'mon guys, I can't be the only one that encountered this problem!...

I noticed that I had this issue too after the last update to 5.2.1

Thanks for responding Charlie. What have you done to combat the bug? Did you try reinstalling an older version?

I had a simlar problem when i was searching my karaoke song folder, it can take up to 4 mins to load up my 17,000 karaoke songs, i just set up a filter folder with the search type=karaoke and now my karaoke songs load up in under a second. Don't know if this helps you with your searchs but it has done wonders for me.

I went to open a subfolder under virtual folders. It took forever - thank goodness it came back to life before the track ran out.

2gb and SATA drive. Could be no more than 20k files.

This was NOT a search but just directory tree.

That happens to me too. I'll open a certain subfolder, and even if the folder has maybe 50 files in it, everything visual starts jumping and freezing. Still the audio plays.

I will install version 5.1 to replace my current 5.1.2 and see if there is a change. Give me a few days to get to that.

Homeboy is right. It happens to me if my hard drives goes to sleep. This is especially a problem on laptops, they often turn devices off to save power. Try adjusting your power settings Control Panel>Power Settings> make whatever adjustments you think will effect your HDs..

DJP1 was spot on with this one!

Here's the deal. I was working the program just like normal, without the "filedate" column in the browser. As soon as I added "filedate", the search lag started. I clicked "fliedate" to organize the files and then unchecked it from the browser tabs. The lag remained. I rechecked "filedate" and put it back into the browser. I then clicked on any other browser tab (BPM, Title, etc.) and then unchecked the "Filedate" tab.

Problem solved. Filedate screwed it all up! I was going out of my mind, and I thought it was my computer. Yikes, ope this helps someone else with this problem.

my configuration:
vista32 ultimate pc sata2 hdd internal 1tb
2gb rams
amd dual core x2 6400+ cpu
asrock board

i had no issues in the PAST with older versions of vdj...

thx i checked filedate out too... i will test it tommorrow and report here :)
stay tuned

Set up virtual folders and use those instead of the main folders, thats what I do on my karaoke as I get the same "Lag". You can also help it by making sure all your folders are expanded before starting the gig and leave them that way through the night.

Hi, like people have been saying, it's when you browse actual folders inside vdj that causes this problem. What I do is only use filter folders and virtual folders so then I don't need to browse the actual folders in virtual dj.

This is really handy for making a filter folder: "filepath contains My Music/2008-11". That will only show you the contents of a folder that I've got called "2008-11" and any sub-folders as well.

If you make filter folders for all the common folders that you browse, then you won't need to browse folders in virtual dj and so you shouldn't get the screen freezing problem.

One little thing (if the developers are reading) it'd be really nice to be able to nest virtual folders and filter folders! I have such a long list in the vdj browser! :-)

so i have solved the problem with uncheck the filedate in vdj browser.... thx :)

it works fine

Great! I'm glad it helped! I never had problem browsing the actual Folders. I like them as opposed to virtual folders because I prefer having subfolders. Promo/2008/Uban or whatever.
