Look at your speakers and see what they handle in RMS.. Not peak. Look at your amp and see what they handle in 8 ohms stereo and also 4 ohms stereo.. Dont look at bridged.. What are the numbers ?

Ok, Ive decided on my first purchase. I figure these will serve as my mains, maybe someday Ill get bigger mains but for now I think they will work.

Now for a sub. Ive heard powered subs don't push as hard. Caliente pointed out they should be 4 ohms as well. I think I like this sub though I think it will but want to double check ,Will it work with the speakers I have listed above with no other components?

tech pro aint that good man. ebay brand. i have a sub and amp from them. trusty but not that good.

for your budget man, go these

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-EUROLIVE-B215D-Active-PA-Speaker-System?sku=620521

powered IS your friend. saves alot of trouble with cables, matching, etc.

behringer is usually hit or miss... but their powered speakers are some of the best bang for the buck. can buy 3 for 1000 dollars. ive used 2 12s of these for 300 and its sounded good. imo cant beat them for the price. good luck.

Between the carvins & the behringers, The carvins are better. They handle more watts and the sound is excellent. They are very light because of there Neodymium magnets.

The technical pro subwoofer is no good. I would stay away from that. That subwoofer doesnt have a bottom vent like the picture. It really has 2 air holes and you wont hear and the " Boom " its more like thump...

oh def the carvins are better. no comparison. but for an audience of 300 and a budget of under 1k, i think the behringers are a good choice - especially because you dont have to worry about amps, crossovers, etc.

good luck man.

I would not suggest Behringer.
I've had both amps done in my B300's and those I used in my home not professionally.

Had great success with Yorkville, and you will ready many suggestions on speakers.
Either way, be prepared to make a considerable investment the first time rather than later, nobody wants used dj gear.

I've read bad things about the Technical Pro subs as well; poor build quality, the cabinets start coming apart.

The Carvins look like nice mains though. Good luck.

Carvin,

Now there's a brand we don't get in the UK! are they US manufactured then?

Carvin is made in the us and they have 4 stores in the state of california. The best part is, you are buying factory direct. Here is a list of international dealers.. http://www.carvinworld.com/dealers.php

Don't get a 4ohm sub, get and 8ohm. I am assuming that you are just getting one sub for now. The problem with getting a 4 ohm sub is that if you want to add a 2nd one later and wire it in parallel, you will drop the impedence down to a dangerous low of 2 ohms. I run two 8ohm subs in parallel which give a 4 ohm load. My amp is bridged and is rated to handle 4 ohm loads bridged. I own the Carvin LM15's. They are decent speakers. I would say they are middle of the pack. Much better than cheaper Peavey and Behringer stuff and as good as JBL JRX. A step up with be JBL MPX, SRX or Yamana Club Series. EV also has a nice lineup... Gemini is cheap stuff with a bad rep in the past but the new stuff is a little bit better ...

Not everyone hooks up speakers in parrallel. You do this if you know how to mess around with the amps settings or wiring.

Well I went ahead and ordered a set of the LM15a's with all the accessories. I think I am going to go ahead and purchase subs and an amp from these guys as well , but later on. I think this is a good start to a PA though =D Thank you so much for the help guys couldn't have done it without you

Seeing that you now stepping into the speaker arena i would advise you to go with tapco its a sub company from mackie basically the same product . tapco thump series . buy two monitors and one sub for now . it sounds really good.

A couple things:

Please learn the proper terminology. They are not called bass bottoms. Subwoofer or sub for short is the proper label.

The best setup for bass frequencies is dual 8ohm subs run in parallel (dropping the impedance down to 4ohm) and setting the amp
to bridged mono mode. Also make sure that the sub rating in bridged mono mode at 4ohms matches the sub rating at that same impedance. The number to look at is RMS or program. The low frequencies from subs don't need to be run in stereo. Sending a stereo signal to two subs is really just a waste of energy. I would also recommend using a crossover to split your signal properly. Some amps have built in crossovers, but you will have to spend quite a bit to get one that will allow you to fine tune the crossover frequency. Most with built in crossovers will have either a set frequency, or they may have dip switches that allow you to choose between a few different frequencies.

For your tops, I suggest a dual driver cab, preferably dual 15"s. Get something that can run off the same make and model amp as the subs. This way if you have a problem with the amp for your tops, you can easily switch a little bit of wiring and be playing music again, you wouldn't have subs at that point, but at least you'd be able to keep playing music.

I am a certified audio pro at Guitar Center. I want to say in closing,

DO NOT HALF-ASS YOUR GEAR PURCHASES!!!!

Look, it costs money to get good sound. You want to spend $500-$1000 for a PA? You will be spending twice that in a year or less, assuming the gear gets a lot of use. If you only do a couple shows a year, no big deal. Just remember that you get what you pay for. Be careful buying PA gear off Ebay, you never know how hard any of that stuff has been driven. Save yourself the heartache and buy new.

I personally run 2 Mackie SRM 450's. They are the V1's with US made drivers. I got mine before they switched to the drivers from China. The Mackies do just fine for shows up to 300 people. I don't have subs, nor do I need them. Most of what I do with my PA is small bars and weddings. If I am doing something bigger, I have a production company that provides a PA, sure I get paid a little less, but I only have to haul in my computer and what not. No set up or tear down, and my back is thanking me for that.

@ LCMXr6 ..Let me know how the carvin powered speakers are. I have the non powered versions and the sound really good.

Ok So my Speakers came in today, Damn they are huge! So I'm super excited, I set them up, turn them on and to my dismay A loud humming noise is coming from both speakers. Its nasty feedback/distortion. Im running them through my RMX and I've tried 1/4" and RCA cables. =/
When I turn my PC on I can hear weird PC noises through my speakers, When I turn off my computer/RMX the sounds go away. Having just dropped so much on these speakers I Have a bit of a headache. ANyone have any suggestions?

Happy St. Pat's Day!

Well When I hook my CD player up to the speakers they work fine, Guitar works fine, Ipod Works fine, Its the RMX for sure. I think the issue is because the input 2 (1/4') and Input 3 (RCA) Are "unbalanced" Only Input 1 is "balanced" but this input is XLR , If I Buy adapters and use "balanced" Input 1 (XLR) maybe the high pitched hum will go away, or maybe its a ground issue with the RMX

**********Oops problem soved....ground loop doh!****************** gaaaaaaaaawd these things are loud holy crap

Besides the loud volume, how is the sound quality ?

Hey whats up Caliente? I played around with these about an hour . I really don't have anything of similarity to compare these speakers too since I've never owned anything like this before, but It would seem that the sound quality is very good. I don't know if the passive ones have the EQ built in the back, but you can tweak the sound very nice. It has Low/mid/High DB knobs as well as a mid-sweep. Then individual gains for inputs 1-3. The Highs are extremely sharp and the mids very crisp. The Bass is pretty good, honestly I was hoping for a bit more with the 15" but it does resonate very nicely. Just doesn't have hard chest vibrating lows, but I'm gonna get a sub for that so now worries. I didn't really get to crank them tonight though because my room-mate has a test tomorrow. Ill test the high levels when he is done. For powered speakers though these are good, originally I didn't want powered speakers but these have proven to be quite powerful and easy to set up. I'll try post a video of them in action soon. Thanks again for your help, I'm probably going to be posting links for subs for you guys to check over for me soon also =D Peace
